Is subsidized housing the right option for your parents?

by Carmen Scott

Category: Senior & Zoomers

Understanding the different subsidized housing options can go a long way in deciding when and where your parents should down size. For lower income seniors renting in the private market , they may be eligible to receive rent supplements through the SAFER program.

The SAFER Program or Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters provides direct cash assistance to eligible residents of British Columbia who are age 60 or over and who pay rent for their homes.

Seniors can also apply to live in subsidized housing in either public, non-profit or co-operative housing. Tenants can pay a flat rate for their rent/well below market value, or pay a percentage based on their gross income. The average percentage is 70% of their gross income and this includes rent / food and some service, such as housekeeping.

Some seniors need help with daily activities as they age, but do not need 24-hour care. This program Independent Living BC provides private apartments with some support services for people who need some assistance to remain independent.

The key is to do your homework. There are dozens of programs, from local, provincial and federal agencies. Check with BC Housing to determine if your parents are eligible for subsidized housing. www.bchousing.org
