How to get your parents to become more active

Part of aging and stay healthy is staying connected with the people in your community. There are several reasons why seniors don't participate- not aware of the program, lack of confidence, not sure how to get to the activity or financial.

If your parents aren't motivated, try going with your parents for a drop in class, or ride the bus with them, or give them a class or 3 month pass to a facility a birthday gift.

Victoria has an abundance of activities for seniors. The library sponsors free 1 -2 hour workshops, everything from how to use your computer, understanding how to use your digital camera, to internet dating. These one time classes are great because there is no committed.

Also many of the Rec. centres like Oak Bay Rec. have many fitness programs for the over 50 crowd, such as aqua fit, health heart or gentle yoga.

Monterey Recreation centre has several day trip outings a month to choose from. All you have to do is show up and they do the rest.

The important thing is getting seniors involved in the community.
